Uri, May 12 (KN0): Amid the cautious return of residents to their homes in shelling-affected villages of Uri, Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) legislator from Langate, Sheikh Khursheed Monday reiterated a strong anti-war stance, saying that war has only brought destruction and suffering, and that lasting peace must now be pursued sincerely by both India and Pakistan. Khursheed, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) while visiting several frontline villages in Uri damaged by recent cross-border shelling, expressed solidarity with the affected population and criticized the political narrative that, according to him, irresponsibly encouraged escalation. “We have been saying from day one — war is not a solution; it only brings destruction,” Khursheed said. “Instead of saber-rattling, the leadership should have listened to the people of LoC — whether it is Uri, Tangdhar, or Poonch. They know best what war brings to their doorsteps.” Referring to days of shelling that displaced thousands and claimed lives, the legislator alleged that many voices, including certain activists, political parties, and leaders, irresponsibly pushed for conflict. “Those who were desperate for war must now answer. Talks have finally been initiated, but at what cost? We appeal to both countries to prevent future provocations, and not let ego or political gain worsen the situation again,” he said. “We had already warned of the destruction it would cause. Now everyone is witnessing the consequences,” AIP legislator said. AIP, under the leadership of incarcerated MP Engineer Rashid, remains committed to relief efforts. “Despite being in jail, Er Rashid directed us to continue the evacuation and aid work. We are duty-bound to help our people,” Khursheed added. He assured the public that AIP would assist in rebuilding efforts. “We will do everything possible — even allocate MP funds to help rebuild homes. Additionally, will personally write to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, requesting him for further donations from MLAs portion of their funds for those affected.” The legislator said that the pain endured by border residents must not be forgotten. “Only when the leadership of both countries genuinely understands the suffering faced by people here, will this cycle of violence stop. Let good sense prevail — even if it took the intervention of a third country to help bring about the ceasefire, let it be a beginning, not just a pause.” “We hope the ceasefire holds. We hope those in power will finally show the sensitivity and courage to prioritize the lives of border residents over politics,” legislator added—(KNO)
